About this joint

A half-lap joins two pieces by cutting a notch half the thickness deep in each, so the two halves overlap and finish level with one another. The wide face-to-face contact is long grain on long grain, and the sawn shoulders bear on the edges of the mating piece, which is what holds a frame square.
