Privacy policy
Effective . This site has no accounts, forms or comments, so there is very little to collect. This page lists what there is.
Who is responsible
I run Wood Joint Explorer on my own. I'm an individual based in India, and for data protection purposes I am the controller (under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, the data fiduciary) for everything described here. I publish under the site's name rather than my own; my legal name is disclosed to a regulator, a court, or someone exercising a legal right when the law requires it. For anything about this policy, write to support@woodjointexplorer.com.
What this site does not collect
There is no account, login, newsletter, comment box or contact form, so nothing you type reaches this site. The site sets no cookies of its own; the only cookies are those Google Analytics sets when it runs, described below. The site is not aimed at children and has no way of collecting anything from them.
Hosting logs
The site is served as static files from Cloudflare's network. To deliver a page, Cloudflare receives your IP address, the page you asked for, the time, and your browser's headers (browser name and version, preferred language, and the page that linked you here). Cloudflare processes this as my service provider and keeps request logs briefly to run and protect its network. I see only aggregate counts in its dashboard, never individual requests. Where a legal basis is needed, it is my legitimate interest in serving the page you asked for and keeping the site running. Cloudflare's own policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
Settings kept in your browser
Two settings live in your browser's local storage. They are not cookies and are never sent anywhere; they exist so the next page doesn't flash the wrong theme or unit.
- wje-theme
- Light or dark, only if you picked one with the theme control. Otherwise the site follows your system setting and stores nothing.
- wje-units
- Millimetres or inches, once you have used the unit toggle. Until then the page guesses from your browser language and stores nothing.
Where the analytics notice below is shown, a third entry records your answer so you aren't asked again. The 3D viewer also remembers, for one browser tab, whether you minimised it. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of this, and the site works the same without it.
Analytics
I use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages and viewer controls get used. It runs in a background worker so it doesn't slow the page. It records the pages you view, an approximate location from your IP address, your browser and device type, and a few interactions I've chosen to report, such as scrubbing a construction state or switching units. Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses. Advertising features and ads personalisation are off. Event data is kept for two months, the shortest retention Google offers, then deleted. Google processes this data on my behalf, partly on servers in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses; Google describes its use of data from partner sites at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, analytics doesn't run until you give consent. A notice at the foot of the screen asks once, on your first visit; declining or ignoring it keeps analytics off and changes nothing else. Elsewhere, analytics runs on page load, on the basis of my legitimate interest in knowing which parts of the site are used. To stop it anywhere: clear this site's data in your browser, install Google's opt-out browser add-on, or write to me.
If you write in
If you email me, I receive your address and your message. I use them to read and act on what you sent, keep them until the matter is closed, then delete them from my inbox. Mail to a woodjointexplorer.com address is forwarded by Cloudflare's email routing to a mailbox hosted by Google; both act as my service providers. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in answering you.
Advertising
There are no advertisements on this site and no advertising cookies. If that changes, I'll update and date this policy before the first advertisement appears, naming the network, what it collects and how to refuse it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data: to know what is held, get a copy, have it corrected or deleted, object to or restrict processing, withdraw consent, and complain to a supervisory authority. In the EEA and the UK these come from the GDPR and the UK GDPR; in India from the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; in California from the CCPA. I hold so little that most requests have a one-line answer, but write to support@woodjointexplorer.com and I'll reply within a month. Nothing about you is sold or shared for advertising.
Changes to this policy
Changes are dated below. If the site starts collecting something new, I'll update this page before it starts.
