About this site
Wood Joint Explorer is a reference for fifteen woodworking joints, and all fifteen are drawn and live. Each one has a page, a set of sourced notes, and a 3D model you can scrub from the first layout line to a seated fit.
Who makes it
I built Wood Joint Explorer and I maintain it on my own. I'm a software developer, not a woodworker, and I publish under the site's name rather than mine. Every model, drawing and still here is my own work: each joint is written as parametric geometry in TypeScript and rendered in your browser, and the stills are screenshots of that same scene. Nothing is traced from a book or another website.
The joints follow the sources listed on the methodology page, Fairham's Woodwork Joints first among them. When a page says a joint resists a pull along one axis, that comes from the shape you can see in the model.
How the models are checked
A joint goes live only after its geometry passes an automated set of checks: closed outlines that all run the same way round, prism stacks with no gap where two members meet, waste volumes that add back up to the stock they came from, and a build at both ends of every parameter's range. I also compare each joint against the layout conventions in its sources, and I look at every still before I commit it.
What this site will not publish
No strength figures. You won't find a load in pounds, a pressure in PSI, or a table ranking joints by how much they hold. Published figures come from one species at one moisture content with one glue in one test rig, and they don't transfer to the piece on your bench. Instead, each page names the directions a joint resists and the directions it doesn't, and shows the geometry doing the work.
No rankings by strength. "Which joint is strongest" is usually the wrong question: a joint is chosen for a direction of load, a look, a stock thickness and the tools you have. The reasoning, and the build check that enforces both rules, are on the methodology page.
No structural or safety advice. The models show how a joint goes together, not whether your piece will hold or how to run a saw safely. The terms say the same in legal words.
Reporting an error
If a drawing is wrong, a step is out of order, or a joint goes by a different name where you work, write to me through the contact page. Tell me the page, the sentence or construction state, and what you expected instead. I fix errors with a dated line in the revision history at the foot of the page, so you can see what changed and when.
